PCR Society launches essential guide to commissioning musculoskeletal services

E-mail
The Primary Care Rheumatology (PCR) Society has published a comprehensive guide to commissioning musculoskeletal (MSK) services which addresses key issues facing new clinical commissioning groups this Autumn.
The guide draws on the expertise of over two dozen health care professionals, health service managers and patient support specialists to advise on:
  • Engaging and consulting with local GPs, secondary care physicians, allied healthcare professionals, patients and managers about MSK needs
  • Conducting in-depth reviews of local MSK services and comparing results with those in areas with similar demographic characteristics
  • Deciding whether to adapt, expand or redesign MSK services
  • Agreeing appropriate outcomes to be achieved by an MSK service
  • Developing a service specification for preventive, acute and chronic MSK disorders, including rare conditions
  • Choosing the most appropriate service provider
The guide also includes case studies outlining innovative approaches to commissioning and provision of MSK services which are already underway, and it signposts the most useful information, tools and templates produced by government and professional organisations to support those involved in commissioning MSK services.
Dr Louise Warburton, President of the PCR Society, explains:
“The PCR Society has developed this guide for commissioners who now have a unique opportunity to redesign the current, outdated, hospital-oriented system of care for MSK disorders into a patient-centred, integrated service which addresses all the public health, NHS and social care needs associated with MSK disorders. The guide draws on the knowledge and insights of healthcare professionals and commissioners with first hand experience of developing and providing MSK services for the modern era.”
The PCR Society Guide to Commissioning Musculoskeletal Services is published as Issue 2 of Expert Opinions in Rheumatology (ISSN 2040-3186), and can be ordered from the PCR Society, PO Box 42, Northallerton, North Yorkshire DL7 8YG. Tel: 01609 774794. Email: helen@pcrsociety.org. Price £5 (free to members of the PCR Society).

* The PCR Society is a national organisation of GPs with an interest in rheumatology, whose aim is to improve the care of patients with MSK disorders. The Society plays an active role in initiatives focused on education, communication and research within the rheumatology community.
